Barn Dance. We had our second HSC Barn Dance last Friday. The dance was held at the Allandale Mansion, or at least in the dance barn on the mansion property. The mansion is a popular spot for outdoor weddings, and so the grounds made for a pastoral early evening setting. The dance barn itself is great—a real barn, with a dance floor in the loft, under a high roof with arching rafters—both rustic and dramatic. Festivities began at 7pm, arranged for as usual by Jonathan and Katie Daugherty. Jonathan found the new location, and once again engaged the Laurel Creek String Band, with Mary Greene on guitar and keyboard, Cecil Gurguanis on fiddle, and Phil Jamison on banjo. Phil also called the dance, and showed us again how good a caller he is, having no trouble getting an inexperienced crowd up and dancing in short order. And there was no shortage of willing and eager dancers. Folks came from all around to attend, from at least thirteen different states. We'll definitely be doing it again in the fall. Watch the HSC weblogs for personal accounts of the dance. And a request: lots of you in attendance were taking photos, digital and otherwise; if you are willing to share some of those photos with us, we would be most grateful. |
